Logistics in the chemical industry: the new 45ft-tank container is going to replace the tank waggon. The company BASF plans to put 500 of these containers in operation until 2017. This solution is not only planned for internal use, but also as a service for interested parties.
In industrial railway transportion the 45ft-tank container is considered as “flexible, cost-effective and easy to handle at loading terminals.” A loaded tank container has a weight of about 75 tons and can be moved with trucks. Moreover it is possible to remove loaded tank containers by crane. Using this type of equipment the transports will need less waggons and tank containers for the same amount of goods.
